"My oil paintings are textual. Strong colors and heavy brushwork are my signature.  I have many bodies of work on various themes.  I celebrate life from an American Black woman's perspective. Vessels can be symbolic of aspects of women's lives. Costumes, shoes, teapots, flower bouquets and buckets are my subjects. The subject's gestures often infer an affinity with the past."

Remington Representing Humanity: The Practice of Being

Oil on Canvas, 40" x 30"

I have never seen this person express anger or act unkind. There are others like my grandson, Remington - though not enough to tip the scales toward perpetual peace for our troubled world. Many strive to, and do become "the change we want to see in the world.” Remington achieves this without seeming to have to work at it. He embodies a quiet compassion that seems innate.

Bleeding: World in Turmoil

Oil on Treated Paper, 22" x 18"

"Bleeding is a description of the condition of our Mother Earth.

The earth  warming; Natural disasters caused by our inattentiveness to the earth's needs; Disregarding the damage we may be causing. Forests burning, killing the habitants within - wild, domestic, and human. Hurricanes taking back the sea shores, and those who occupy the shores and beyond. Natural disasters abound - The world is Bleeding."

Brown Bleeding

Oil on Treated Paper, 22" x 18"

"The bucket is a metaphor for our world - bent, but not broken. It has beautiful patina and a patch in the bottom. The patch on the bottom of the 'world' is my Africa - the birthplace of life on Earth and yet neglected from a worldview. Africa is home to one of the largest group of 'othered' peoples. International attention is usually a response to atrocities - an attempt to repair the 'hole' with a patch."

Returning to the Scene of the Crime: Women's Prison: Ghana

Oil on Canvas, 24" x 18"

Also Available as a Giclée

Elmina Castle, also known as Castelo de Sao Jorge da Mina, is the first and oldest European castle and fort (Fort St. George) built in Ghana.

Constructed by the Portuguese in 1482 on the Gold Coast, Elmina Castle was designed for trade and later became a major, notorious depot in the Atlantic slave trade.

In 2018, my visit to Elmina Castle in Ghana, Africa, allowed me to comprehend the horror my ancestors endured. Had they not survived, I would not be here now. The Elmina Castle museum docents explained what the castle was like during the Slave Trade. The dungeons have been swept clean since Ghana became a country, yet the dungeons still hold the memories, odors, and fears of the captured women, shackled five together, lying on the floor in the dark.

Every dungeon door was called the “Door of No Return." The doors lead to the ships docked a few feet away.

This painting, "Returning to the Scene of the Crime: Women's Prison: Ghana", is an attempt to express how I felt in the dank and dark of the dungeons and the infrequent interruption of light from the “Door of No Return”.

The castles remain (two in Elmina, Ghana). The title on the door has been edited. The castle doors read “Door of Return.” It is clear we are welcome to come home.

Year of the Rat: 2020

Oil on Canvas, 60" x 48"

"The year 2020 was the year of Covid-19 Virus. Also, it was the Year of the Rat in Lunar New Year. The year 2020 was traumatic for the world. Besides the worldwide isolation, there were voter fraud accusations, a violent uprising against the government representatives of the United States, and police brutality that often lead to murder. A new awakening to awareness of the racial divide lead to further justified unrest for people of color."

Abundance of Love for Family

Oil on Canvas, 57" x 48"

"There was a time when I didn't understand why young people died. How could He allow people to die so early in life?  My mother's comforting answer was 'God always picks the prettiest flowers.' It occurs to me that we are here to make a difference in His world. My gifts are artistic.  The difference I can make is to glorify God with my gifts. Throughout my art career, I've lost many friends and family. Painting wilted bouquets keeps the memory of the flowers vibrant and alive for me. It eases my grief."
